Exam administration: The California Insurance exams are multiple choice and are given on computer

Passing score required: 70% (all exams above)
Exam locations: California Insurance exams are administered by the California Department of Insurance and are only given at specific state buildings throughout California. You can find a list of testing locations on the California Department of Insurance website by searching for “test locations” in the search box on their homepage at www.insurance.ca.gov.
Exam dates: The California Insurance exams are administered Monday through Friday at various times throughout the day.

Who Takes the California Insurance Exams?

The type of insurance you would like to sell will determine which California insurance license you will obtain. There are three main insurance licenses in California (Life-Only Agent, Accident & Health and Fire and Casualty). The Life-Only and Accident & Health insurance licenses will allow you to sell life and health insurance (including annuities). The Fire and Casualty insurance license will allow you to sell all other types of insurance (including personal lines and commercial lines). If you are only going to be selling personal lines and NOT commercial lines then you can take the Personal Lines only exam. If you are only going to be selling personal lines auto insurance you can obtain the Auto Limited lines license.

What are the pre-licensing requirements for the various California Insurance licenses?

California Life Only – 20-Hours + 12-Hours specific to Ethics & Code
California Accident & Health Only – 20-Hours + 12-Hours specific to Ethics & Code
You can obtain both licenses above and take a combined exam by completing our 40-Hour Life & Health Agent course (plus 12-Hours of Ethics & Code) and scheduling to take the combined exam.
California Fire & Casualty – 40-Hours + 12-Hours specific to Ethics & Code
California Personal Lines – 20-Hours + 12-Hours specific to Ethics & Code
California Auto Limited Lines – 20-Hours + 12-Hours specific to Ethics & Code

The 12-Hour Ethics and Code course only has to be completed once. Pre-license education can be obtained through a live class, or online.

Are the Insurance Exams different state to state?

Yes! Be very careful when preparing for your exam to make sure the material you study is California specific. There are many insurance schools out there that offer generic study materials that are NOT specific to the CA exam. The course you study MUST be California specific. Our online courses were created specifically to satisfy the California pre-license requirement and prepare you to pass your California insurance exam on your first attempt.

What content do the California Insurance tests cover?

The California insurance tests are very broad. The California Department of Insurance creates and published exam outlines that are referred to as “Educational Objectives” for each exam. You can view and print the Educational Objectives for each and every exam by typing “Educational objectives” into the search box on the California Department of Insurance website homepage at www.insurance.ca.gov. All of our course content was created to reflect the most recent copy of the California Educational Objectives.

Do I need a sponsor to take a California Insurance exam?

No. You do not need a sponsor. In order to sell insurance in California you do need to be appointed by an insurer. However, you do not need to be appointed to schedule your exam.

How do I schedule my insurance exam?

You can schedule your exam prior to completing our online pre-licensing course. This way you can ensure the date you select is shortly after your completion of our course so the information is still fresh in your mind. You will schedule your exam on the California Department of Insurance website (www.insurance.ca.gov). You must fill out an electronic license application and pay both your licensing fee and testing fee during registration. Once the DOI has received your application and fees they will notify you via e-mail that you can select a test date on their site. You can obtain more detailed information about scheduling your exam by typing “FLASH” into the search box on the California Department of Insurance website.

What should I bring to the test center the day of my Insurance Exam?

You should bring your Key Facts from our California Insurance Licensing course to re-read just prior to going in to take your California insurance exam. This will load your memory for the test. They will provide you with a pen/pencil, scratch paper, and basic function calculator at the test site. Make sure to write down your cheat sheet on your scratch paper when you sit down at your cubicle prior to starting your insurance license test. This will allow you to refer back to it whenever you need to during the exam.

If I don’t pass is there any waiting period that applies before I can retake the insurance licensing exam?

No, there is no waiting period before you can re-test. However, each time a candidate retakes the exam another full testing fee is required ($41 for most exams).

What do the question on the California Insurance exams look like?

Here are two California Insurance Licensing Exam questions that come from our materials that are very similar to the formatting and content of the questions on the exam:

Life Agent

  1. On a Major Medical Expense policy, the purpose of co-insurance is to
  1. Require the insured to pay most of the claim
  2. Require that the insured and the insurer share the claim after the deductible has been paid
  3. Require the insured to pay a small co-payment per office visit
  4. Encourage preventative care

Fire & Casualty

  1. Jan has a PAP that provides full coverage for her car. Naomi has a PAP that covers her car for liability only. If Jan is involved in an at-fault accident while driving Naomi’s car, how will coverage be allocated:
  1. Jan’s policy is primary for both Bodily Injury to others and Collision damage to Naomi’s car
  2. Naomi’s policy is excess for both Bodily Injury to others and Collision damage to her car
  3. Jan’s policy is excess for Bodily Injury to others but primary on the Collision damage to Naomi’s car
  4. Naomi’s policy is primary for Bodily Injury to others, but neither policy will cover the Collision damage to Naomi’s car

  1.    B   Major Medical Expense policies require that the insured pay a percentage of a claim (usually 20%) after the deductible has been paid, which discourages preventative care and over utilization of medical services. It is HMOs that encourage preventative care by charging only small co-payments per office visit.
  2.    C   Remember, the owner’s policy is always primary. Naomi is the owner of the car and Jan is the driver. Naomi’s PAP states that she can loan her car to anyone she wants, and her policy will be primary. Jan’s BI coverage will be excess, if needed. However, since Naomi does not have Collision coverage on her own car, Jan’s policy will become primary for that coverage, since her policy states that she is covered to drive anyone else’s car, with their permission.

What to do the night before your test:

DO NOT stay up all night cramming. This may have worked in college but it will not work now. Why? Let’s face it. Most of us taking this exam are NOT fresh out of college. When was the last time you stayed up until 4 in the morning? Shocking your body is not a smart thing to do the night before what could be the biggest test of your life. You must be rested the day of your insurance exam. Get a good nights sleep and make sure to eat a good breakfast the morning of your test.

What to do on the day of your insurance exam:

Get to the test center early. There is nothing worse than encountering a traffic jam on the way to your test and getting stressed out about making it on time. You will have to arrive early as you will want to sit in your car at the test center and read the Key Facts that were provided in our online course three times prior to going in to take the test. How you should take your insurance licensing exam:

The most important tip we can give you is to READ THE QUESTION! This most likely sounds pretty stupid. However, I would imagine as you have studied for the test you have missed many questions simply because you did not read them correctly. Read the question twice before even looking at the answers, then read every answer before picking which one you think is correct. Answer A may look good, but answer D may be better.

NEVER pick an answer you have not heard of. They will make words up on the California insurance licensing exam that do not even exist. If it has not been covered in our online video exam prep course, it is not a correct answer on the exam.

Only mark those questions for review you really don’t know the answer to, or you have narrowed it down to two possible correct answers. DO NOT review the full exam once you have completed it. In our experience if you review the full exam you may get confused and start changing answers. Your first selection is your best. Only review those questions you have marked for review.

There will be very few math questions on your exam – There will be very few math questions on the insurance exams and you may not have any at all.

They will provide you everything you need at the test center – They will provide you a calculator, scratch paper and pencil. You do not need to bring any of theses items with you. You cannot take a programmable calculator into the test.
